Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has been promoted as a $Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has been promoted as a “clean” fuel that will complement Ireland’s energy mix, but in fact LNG is a climate and human rights disaster. Two LNG import terminals are planned for Ireland in Cork Harbour and Tarbert, Co. Kerry, which would import fracked gas from the US. What impacts will these projects have on communities at the other end of the supply chain in the US? In this unique webinar we take a look at both sides of the toxic LNG supply chain, revealing the health and environmental impacts the LNG promoters fail to disclose. Renewables are generating more and more of our energy but we are a long way from a #fossilfree Ireland. Although we know we have to keep fossil fuels in the ground to stop the worst effects of climate change but the government and private companies are still planning new fossil fuel projects. This week @fiannafail and @finegael launched a pro $This week @fiannafail and @finegael launched a programme for government light on #climateaction and silent on #fossilfuels. At this stage of #climatebreakdown we need a plan which stipulates no new fossil fuel exploration or infrastructure. So how do we do that? First, a reminder that we need to stop building new fossil fuel infrastructure YESTERDAY. Actually to have a decent chance of staying under a 1.5C temperature rise we should have stopped last year. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-07999-w The same applies to offshore exploration. We need an immediate moratorium on all oil and gas exploration off the Irish coast #ditchthedrills. But the Irish government hasn’t got the memo. Along with allowing further gas exploration it has allowed for the planning of two huge Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminals in Co. Kerry and in Cork harbour. Either would lock us into fracked gas for 30 - 40 years. Planning permission for Shannon LNG was renewed in 2019, and the US backers @newfortressenergy are gung-ho to start construction, but the excellent Friends of the Irish Environment has temporarily scuppered their plans through a legal case. So what does the new government need to do to stop Shannon LNG? There are a couple of options: 1. Ban the importation of fracked gas or 2. Ban new fossil fuel infrastructure. Fracking has appalling impacts on human health, climate and the environment, which is why we banned it in Ireland in 2017.Stopping all fracked gas coming into our energy system is tricky because a molecule of fracked gas cannot necessarily be differentiated from a molecule of conventional fossil gas (which is still hugely damaging), which is why we need a global ban on fracking. To be sure of stopping LNG we need to ban new fossil fuel infrastructure. Luckily, we can do this! Portland and other US districts already have. The proposed Shannon and Cork LNG terminals would import fracked gas from the US, devastating communities there and locking us in to fossil fuels to 2050 and beyond. As negotiations to form a government continue, #climatejustice must be central any proposed programme for government. That means #noLNG, not in Kerry, not in Cork, not in Texas, not in Pennsylvania #notherenotanywhere. Time to say NO to LNG and #breakthefrackingcycle. Say no to Cork LNG! Demonstration outside City Hal $Say no to Cork LNG! Demonstration outside City Hall and Port of Cork today with @savergvfromlng, Cork XR and @fridaysforfuturecork. This planned huge terminal would import fracked gas from the Rio Grand Valley in Texas with devastating impacts on vulnerable communities there. While also locking Ireland into dirty fossil fuels beyond 2050. At a meeting with Port of Cork today a delegation handed over a petition with over 3400 signatures and a civil society letter signed by over 50 groups asking Port of Cork to drop the project. We cannot let this project go ahead. #NOLNG #notherenotanywhere$

Time is running out in the fight for a safe climat $Time is running out in the fight for a safe climate. Ireland urgently needs to move towards clean energy but the Port of Cork is pushing to lock us into increased dependence on one of the most dangerous fossil fuels for several decades to come. In 2017, the Port of Cork signed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) with NextDecade, to develop a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal. This will allow the importation of fracked gas from the USA. Fracking is an incredibly harmful method of extracting oil and gas. Ireland banned fracking because of its severe impacts on health and the environment. To inflict those impacts on indigenous and marginalised communities overseas is unbelievably hypocritical. There is no community consent for this project. In recent weeks both Cork City and County Councils have passed motions that they will write to the Port of Cork asking for an annulment of the plans to develop the project. Please stand up for people and the planet by showing the Port of Cork that this project is not welcome. We encourage you to bring signs if you can, as we will be taking a photo.$
