The heatwave may be over, but the summer of county development plan consultations is not! If you're from Louth, Kilkenny or Galway, make sure to make your voice heard to your council by making a submission to demand fossil free communities with no further energy infrastructure, renewable energy investment, a just transition and community involvement. Using our template and following the steps on our website, you can have your submission in within about 10 minutes.

County development plans are strategies covering a number of years, so now is the time to make sure climate is front and centre of these strategies!

Fuel poverty is the inability to heat and power a home. It is a function of three interconnected factors: income, energy prices and energy efficiency. In Ireland, two key Government strategies, Warmer Homes: A Strategy for Affordable Energy in Ireland (2011) and Strategy to Combat Energy Poverty 2016-2019, have aimed to eliminate energy poverty by focusing on energy efficiency. But the objective has been hampered by the difficulty of accessing the schemes in low-income communities and few incentives for landlords to retrofit rental properties. Energy poverty has been linked to negative health impacts, particularly respiratory conditions, cardiovascular disease, and decreased well-being.

A just energy transition that tackles energy poverty must prioritise the needs of those most vulnerable to energy poverty including children, people on low-incomes, and those living in rented accommodation. Furthermore, all climate policy related to energy costs and/or energy efficiency must consider the potential impacts on the fuel poor as those are two key factors that have been linked to energy poverty.

This webinar will open up a conversation about the hidden impact of energy poverty, considering this issue on an individual, community and systemic basis. What challenges do we face in addressing energy poverty? What solutions do we need to overcome energy poverty? How can we influence a nationwide just transition by tackling energy poverty? And why must social justice be embedded in climate action?

Speakers include: Marija Mileta, Head of Communications and Climate Change Programme Assistant, Zelena akcija/Friends of the Earth Croatia; Susanne Rogers, Research and Policy Analyst, Social Justice Ireland; Michelle Kearns, Project Policy Worker, National Traveller MABS (Money Advice and Budgeting Service).

This webinar will examine the topic of data centres and what part they might play in our society, highlighting their social, environmental and economic impacts. Speakers include: Patrick Bresnihan, Lecturer in Geography, Maynooth University, Phoebe Duvall, Planning and Environmental Policy Officer, An Taisce, and Ian Bitterlin, Consulting Engineer and formerly Visiting Professor at the University of Leeds.

Key questions will be explored including: What data is stored in data centres? Could they be more efficient? Do we need them and how should they be powered?

As the year draws to a close we want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2021. This year has been a challenging one for all, sometimes it felt like one big zoom meeting. Gone was the post meeting/demo unwind catch-ups over a pint or tea which we all missed dearly. 2021 brings a new year and as we countinely build the movement in Ireland to #BreakFreeFromFossilFuels and working for a just transition for all communities both here and globally. What happened to #keepitintheground @eamondryan? Last week the Minister said we don't need "legislative underpinning" on offshore drilling. But legislation is ESSENTIAL. Without it, if the government falls it's right back to drill baby drill.
