To the people of Tipperary: until this Friday, the 15th October, Tipperary County Council are accepting submissions as part of their county development plan. This is Tipperary's strategy for the county for 2022-28 that covers many aspects includiny energy, the environment and climate action. We have a handy template (link in bio) with which you can ask Tipperary to plan for a fossil free future in a matter of minutes, take a stance against new fossil fuel infrastructure, for renewable and a just transition.

This will be a big week for our climate targets and the future of Data Centres in Ireland. We're calling for a pause on data centres!

We need to #PressPause by enacting a moratorium on Data Centres. At the moment there is no considered strategy for Data Centre growth. Applications are simply being accepted on the basis of economic growth - with little consideration given to our ill-prepared infrastructure.

What could make more sense than taking a step back and assessing if we can handle this spike in electricity demand? Singapore felt the same way & at just 7% electricity demand they enacted a pause on Data Centres. Meanwhile in 2020 we were reaching 11% with no pause in sight.

Greenwashing is rife in the Data Centre sector, with Taoiseach Micheal Martin dubbing them "eco-structure" last week. The current operation of Data Centres in Ireland is anything but eco-friendly.

Some companies say their data centres are 100% renewable but in reality they rely heavily on carbon offsetting. These offsetting schemes don't change the fact that new fossil infrastructure is being built to support these Data Centres and their enormous demand will increase the risk of energy poverty in Ireland.

Our campaign is simple, let's #PressPause to consider how we can house Data Centres without causing blackouts and locking us into a fossil fuelled future.

Fuel poverty is the inability to heat and power a home. It is a function of three interconnected factors: income, energy prices and energy efficiency. In Ireland, two key Government strategies, Warmer Homes: A Strategy for Affordable Energy in Ireland (2011) and Strategy to Combat Energy Poverty 2016-2019, have aimed to eliminate energy poverty by focusing on energy efficiency. But the objective has been hampered by the difficulty of accessing the schemes in low-income communities and few incentives for landlords to retrofit rental properties. Energy poverty has been linked to negative health impacts, particularly respiratory conditions, cardiovascular disease, and decreased well-being.

A just energy transition that tackles energy poverty must prioritise the needs of those most vulnerable to energy poverty including children, people on low-incomes, and those living in rented accommodation. Furthermore, all climate policy related to energy costs and/or energy efficiency must consider the potential impacts on the fuel poor as those are two key factors that have been linked to energy poverty.

This webinar will open up a conversation about the hidden impact of energy poverty, considering this issue on an individual, community and systemic basis. What challenges do we face in addressing energy poverty? What solutions do we need to overcome energy poverty? How can we influence a nationwide just transition by tackling energy poverty? And why must social justice be embedded in climate action?

Speakers include: Marija Mileta, Head of Communications and Climate Change Programme Assistant, Zelena akcija/Friends of the Earth Croatia; Susanne Rogers, Research and Policy Analyst, Social Justice Ireland; Michelle Kearns, Project Policy Worker, National Traveller MABS (Money Advice and Budgeting Service).

As the year draws to a close we want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2021. This year has been a challenging one for all, sometimes it felt like one big zoom meeting. Gone was the post meeting/demo unwind catch-ups over a pint or tea which we all missed dearly. 2021 brings a new year and as we countinely build the movement in Ireland to #BreakFreeFromFossilFuels and working for a just transition for all communities both here and globally.
