Hydrogen is increasingly cited as a low-carbon solution to the energy crisis. Hydrogen fuel is an energy carrier which can be used to store or move energy and is produced alongside fossil or renewable energies.

Proponents suggest that it is essential to support renewable energy in the absence of fossil fuels, providing invaluable back-up for when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine, and supporting energy security.

In a global context, however, there are concerns that hydrogen will be used to justify continued investment in fossil gas infrastructure, and that hydrogen is currently generated primarily from fossil fuels. In this webinar, energy experts consider the role of hydrogen in our energy future, discussing issues such as different forms of hydrogen, energy security, and hydrogen as community energy.

Join us this Tuesday evening at 6.30, where we'll hear from Patrick Brodie, FRQSC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies at McGill University; Donna Gartland, CEO of Codema - Energy Efficiency Agency Dublin; and Mél Hogan, Director of the Environmental Media Lab and Associate Professor of Communication, Media and Film at the University of Calgary.

Our webinar will explore a variety of perspectives on data centre development and if and how we can stay digitally connected while aligning with our climate targets and a socially just transition. What data is stored in data centres? Could they be run more efficiently? Do we need them and if so, how should they be powered?

During the webinar, we will also speak about making submissions to data centre planning applications, and demonstrate our publicly available resources designed to make this process more accessible.

Since 2015, Ireland has seen massive growth in data centre development; what was initially a key feature of our Enterprise Strategy has become a significant point of concern for both our climate targets and our energy sector. Eirgrid projects that data centres could account for up to 27% of Ireland's electricity demand by 2028.

In Ireland, we have committed to halving our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, with 70% of our electricity powered renewably by this time. However, our government has acknowledged that data centres will create significant challenges to achieving this transition.

To the people of Cork: until next Tuesday, the 15th February, Cork County Council is accepting submissions as part of their county development plan. This is Cork County Council's strategy for 2022-28 that covers many aspects including energy, the environment and climate action. Currently, the council is looking for input on some proposed amendments to the draft plan. Today we ended the public aspects of our #ditchthe

Today we ended the public aspects of our #ditchthedrills campaign to ban offshore drilling for oil and gas. During the summer with the passing of the Climate Act new licences to drill for fossil fuels was banned making Ireland one of only several countries to do this.

We would like to thank all the amazing groups, NGOs, political parties, politicians and individuals who worked tirelessly to achieve this. A special mention to @bridsmith.td and @people_before_profit who did some outstanding work to keep the #climateemergency alive throughout the last Dáil.

And to thank @eamonryan and the @greenparty_ie for their support in the campaign and for ensuring the ban was part of the Climate Act. We are disappointed that existing licences were not included but we are going to keep harrying those with submissions when they arise.

The #ditchthedrills campaign will always have a special place in NHNA heart as it led to the formation of the group and some lifelong friendships. Our work will continue with our campaigns on #LNG and #Datacentres, please get involved, we are plus craic :-).

Happy Christmas climate peeps, the Craictivist Christmas party is back! And this time it's personal. Well we just mean we can't have a huge party because of Covid, but that won't stop us from having all of the craic(tivism)! Come join us (NHNA, Dublin Ecofems, Climate Case Ireland, more!) for a short cycle up the Royal Canal and outdoor pints in the Bernard Shaw afterwards on Saturday December 11th.

Meeting at the Convention Centre at 2pm and cycling up the canal to Castleknock, then back to the Bernard Shaw in Phibsborough for food and drink at 4pm.

This will be a big week for our climate targets and the future of Data Centres in Ireland. We're calling for a pause on data centres!

We need to #PressPause by enacting a moratorium on Data Centres. At the moment there is no considered strategy for Data Centre growth. Applications are simply being accepted on the basis of economic growth - with little consideration given to our ill-prepared infrastructure.

What could make more sense than taking a step back and assessing if we can handle this spike in electricity demand? Singapore felt the same way & at just 7% electricity demand they enacted a pause on Data Centres. Meanwhile in 2020 we were reaching 11% with no pause in sight.

Greenwashing is rife in the Data Centre sector, with Taoiseach Micheal Martin dubbing them "eco-structure" last week. The current operation of Data Centres in Ireland is anything but eco-friendly.

Some companies say their data centres are 100% renewable but in reality they rely heavily on carbon offsetting. These offsetting schemes don't change the fact that new fossil infrastructure is being built to support these Data Centres and their enormous demand will increase the risk of energy poverty in Ireland.

Our campaign is simple, let's #PressPause to consider how we can house Data Centres without causing blackouts and locking us into a fossil fuelled future.

The blank cheque needs to end now.
